3D is definitely the largest fad hitting cinema today. Whether you think 3D is gimicky or the next best thing since sliced bread, just like a lot of other movie “magic” it involves a lot of work. Manual work.
The process from 2D to 3D is far from automated. Months of rotoscoping and painting go into each conversion, even films shot in stereo. That makes my arm numb just thinking about it.
