It provided uncompressed recording with support for SDI and HDMI signals all in a very small package and all for under $350. Only downside was the fact that uncompressed files can be very, very large.

Version 2 of the HyperDeck includes all the features you’ve come to know and love but with the additional ability to record to Avid’s DNxHD compressed codec. This keeps file sizes a great deal smaller while still offering more flexibility than the built in codec of most cameras.

If you shoot on a Sony E-mount camera like the FS100, then one of the most frustrating parts is using Canon EF lenses. To date, there have only been options for “dumb adapters” which either require you to set your aperture with a separate Canon camera or with an iris wheel built into the adapter. Neither of these options give you the best performance or control of your lens.

Companies like Birger and MTF have announced smart adapters, but those have been plagued with high price tags and delays.

As if out of nowhere, a new company announced a smart adapter priced in the rather affordable range of $399. Metabones, who is selling through Conurus, has created this adapter to support many functions of the EF lenses including:

True electronic integration of aperture diaphragm – let camera automatically choose aperture in P or S exposure modes, or dial in yourself on the camera body in A or M modes.

Powered by camera body. No external power source required.

Wide open button (opposite of depth-of-field preview function) makes manual focusing easy.

Image stabilization (IS)

Electronic manual focusing

EXIF (focal length, aperture, lens ID)

The only glaring feature the adapter misses is autofocus, though not a surprise and certainly not a deal breaker.

Demand is expected to be high, but you can go on their site and order now.

Back in November we announced our ambitious new series, Film Scene. The response was great and we decided to run a short fund raiser to help us get a few things off the ground. Our ultimate goal was $20K which we didn’t reach, but we did raise over $4K thanks to everyone’s help. This has allowed us to get the ball moving on a few necessary steps.

We wanted to let you all know that Film Scene is still in development and we hope to start filming sometime in March. Since we didn’t raise the full $20K there are certain corners we’ll have to cut or separate forms of funding we’ll have to get. More about that to come in February.

Thanks again for all your support and help. We are very excited to launch this unique show that will hopefully educate and entertain the next wave of filmmakers.

After hinting about it at NAB, JVC has officially announced a 4K handheld camcorder. This bold step into the 4K market features a 1/2-inch CMOS imager with 8.3 million active pixels, a built in f2.8 10x zoom lens and a 3.5-inch touch-screen LCD monitor. The camera records 4K images at 24p, 50p and 60p, and also supports 1080i and 1080/60p HD. The HMQ10 uses JVC’s Falconbrid LSI-chip which allows it to de-Bayer the image in real time. You can monitor live 4K output via four HDMI terminals. It records up to two hours of AVCHD video to SDHC or SDXC memory cards at a bit rate of up to 144 Mbps.

Expect it to start shipping in March at a MSRP of $4,995.
